  • Resumen
    • Although stainless steel has been increasingly used in construction during the last decades due to its excellent aesthetics and ease of maintenance given by its natural corrosion resistance, its employ as structural material is still rather limited to singular structures. This particular situation is given by the existing lack of knowledge concerning the actual behaviour of stainless steel among designers and engineers. Furthermore, since its thought as structural material is relatively new, there are no full developed design rules in the corresponding structural guides and standards to obtain the optimum design when conceiving stainless steel structures.

These circumstances make evident the need to explore the structural behaviour of the material and develop new design rules to exploit stainless steel to its full potential in construction. The recognition of this necessity has inspired researchers all around the world to tackle the analysis of stainless steel as structural material. This thesis pretends to make a step forward in this direction. Thus, the aim of this research is to enhance the fundamental understanding of the behaviour of stainless steel as structural material failing in shear to finally develop a new complete shear design method in order to achieve a more efficient design of these stainless steel structural elements. Special attention has been taken to the effects of the material non-linearity, which is the most particular feature of stainless steel in terms of structural behaviour.

As a first step to achieve the mentioned general objective, an extensive literature review concerning the shear behaviour of plate girders together with the structural response of stainless steel is conducted in order to detect the key aspects to deal with during the research and to define the general work lines of the investigation.
