Resumen de Optimization techniques to improve energy efficiency and to mitigate line overloads

Paola Pezzini

  • This PhD Thesis analyzes the use of optimization techniques in the transmission and distribution network in order to enhance energy efficiency and mitigate line overloads. First of all the state of the art of optimization techniques applied to transmission and distribution networks is presented and the suitable devices for power flow control are studied. Then, it is shown how to enhance the energy efficiency by installing distribution transformer by means of linear optimization and respecting the constraints set by a specific distribution regulation policy. Afterwards, three different applications of a genetic algorithm are proposed and tested on three different test systems. First of all, it is studied how to optimally locate and dimension a Flexible Alternate Current Transmission System device to improve energy efficiency in an electrical network.

Then, a series reactor is placed and dimensioned to mitigate line overloads, minimizing the total sum of line overloads or minimizing the total number of line overloads. Finally, a phase shifting transformer is installed and dimensioned to minimize line overloads or to minimize the total number of line overloads.
