Resumen de Estudi del parpelleig en usuaris/es de pantalles digitals. Anàlisi d'estratègies pel condicionament del parpelleig i la distància de manera no intrusiva

Marc Argilés Sans

  • INTRODUCTION There is an agreement in the scientific community, which indicates that excessive exposure to digital displays poses implications at a visual level, being ocular dryness and visual fatigue those of greater impact. The various studies document ocular dryness and visual fatigue as a risk factor for these symptoms. Blinking is directly related to the distribution of the tear film, which is altered in response to the use of digital displays, contributing in many cases to an increase in ocular dryness and fatigue. The digital display viewing distance tends to be shorter than when working on paper, especially on those devices with smaller screens, such as mobile or tablets, favoring the increase in visual fatigue of users.

PURPOSE The main aim of the study was to explore and characterize blinking parameters and viewing distance in digital displays users. To this end, automatic tools for the non-intrusive analysis of the main rellevant parameters describing the eye blink process and the working distance have been set up. Throughout this work, sorne initial strategies for the improvement of the quality of eye blinks and to promote the use of the recommended viewing distance have been proposed.

CONCLUSlONS Incomplete blinking is one of the main causes of ocular dryness, affecting the correct distribution of the tear film. Blinking rate was found to decrease in ali reading conditions, and the percentage of incomplete blinks to increase when using a digital display. Blink regularity has also a role in ocular dryness. Similarly, viewing distance in front of computer displays was not constant, but varied according to the task performed: for example, video viewing (more distance) versus reading (less distance). Sorne conditioning strategies have been explored in order to improve eye blinking and working distance for digital screen users. Future studies shall aim at determining the effectiveness of reeducation strategies on office workers, exploring the variation of blinking parameters and dryness symptoms.
