  • Resumen
    • This doctoral thesis is a research on the professional and artistic career of the screenwriter William Goldman, an author with his own conscience within the complex Hollywood machinery.

The doctoral thesis has three chapters. The first chapter traces a chronological profile of William Goldman¿s professional trajectory in order to evaluate the reasons and the scope of such an extensive professional career, and to build a solid chronological and factual base as a starting point for subsequent analysis.

The second chapter delves deeper into William Goldman¿s own conscience as a writer. The analysis has focused on William Goldman¿s more personal movie work: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), The Great Waldo Pepper (1975), The Princess Bride (1974-1987), The Sea Kings (1979-1991), The Year of he Comet (1979-1992) and Maverick (1994), six scripts not based on any previous work which belong to the adventure-comedy genre, and in which Goldman¿s personal use of irony is revealed in a very clear manner. The aim is to portray Goldman¿s poetic cosmovision, understood as a vital attitude ¿which interprets the status of mankind in the world¿ that is present in his work.

The third chapter is devoted to the two most relevant original scripts in his career ¿and his most cherished¿ Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Princess Bride. These scripts very clearly reveal the author¿s conscience and they can be considered as the most comprehensive and completely finished scripts of his career.
