Orderly enlargement of the existing city, at the same time, it is proposed as a satisfactory model of city, and as an efficient procedure to achieve it. And it seeks support in the repeatedly proven effectiveness of orthogonal grids, and in his historically demonstrated capacity, for the basic organization of processes of urbanization.

De Terán (1996) The orthogonal grid and the block used traditionally as tools for the growth of our cities, that to the beginning of the 20th century I stop bing used, demonstrating his return 50 years afterwards, as Sainz indicates (2006, p. 166) “as scheme of urban organization supposedly more suitable to recover the lost urbanity”.

This research analyzes the processes causing this scene, starting from the analysis of the history of urbanism around the 1920s, characterized by the presence of the building and the functionalist polygon, His conceptualization and debate in the International Congresses of Modern Architecture [CIAM], the reasons that gave place to his discussion, the morpho-typological reading of the city from the 1950s, and his return and implantation in the incipient democratic Spain of the 80, that becomes a new orthodoxy with which to face the new city project, remaining as a planning scheme valid in our days.

The results of this investigation, are inscribed in the continuity of use until today, the grid and the building: the first leaving the strict checkerboard, adapting to dimensions more reasonable, cracking and bending at the discretion of the urban planner; the second as a new building type: the “building-block, Occupying the interstices of the grill with new legacy features of the modern block, adapting better than those of the nineteenth-century widenings, leaving us in doubt that these are the only tool to find us again with the urban space.
