  • Resumen
    • The city of Antonio Prado, located in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil started to be built at late nineteenth century by immigrants from the northern region of Italy, who left their homeland in the pursuit of new opportunities in America. The city experienced a large commercial growth, becoming an important centre until the mid-40s when external and political issues shifted the commercial hub to other towns of the region, creating a growth standstill. The economic decline allowed, in return, the maintenance of buildings with the Italian colonization distinctive architecture unlike what happened to other centres where ¿progress¿¿ left no room for the antique.

Antonio Prado presents today an architectural ensemble protected by the Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN) consisting of 47 buildings, mostly in wood, built between the years 1890 ¿ 1940.

Antonio Prado preserves the original features of its foundation allowing using them as a basis for study. It is a city which witnessed an architecture blended techniques, materials and other functionality needs than the ones the immigrants had in their home country.

Based on this, it might be said that despite the great amount of material produced on the Italian Immigration in Rio Grande do Sul¿ northeast region, there is a gap in terms of specific architecture studies, when comparing these immigrants¿ towns background and their architecture destination.

In this context I propose contrasting the existent architecture at that time on Italian lands with the later built one in Brazilian enclave, which is the aim of the thesis at issue.
