    El punto de partida de la tesis es la novela II sorriso dell'ignoto marianaio de vicenzo (S.Agata di Mitilello, Messina, 1933), que se publicó por primera vez en 1976 y que desde entonces no ha dejado de gozar de éxito de público y de la atención de la crítica especializada, consiguiendo así por opinión unánime, condicen y reconocimiento de obra clásica de la modernidad no exclusivamente italiana.

    La novela cuenta con dos versiones al castellano (1981, 2001) y se ha traducido también al francés (1980), al inglés (1994), al alemán (1984), al catalán (2006).

    La tesis por tanto, consta de tres secciones:

    La primera es una introducción con la descripción de todos los testimonios (impresos, mecanografiados, autógrafos), la delineación de la historia y de la evolución del texto, la justificación de la edición, y delos criterios y recursos adoptados para llevarla a cabo. La segunda es la novela editada críticamente según los principios metodológico del llamado genetismo, con el texto y un doble aparato: uno de variantes, otro de notas de comentario.

    La tercera y última es un dossier con la transcripción comentada de los testimonios manuscritos autógrafos y de otros, mecanografiados e impresos, del mayor interés en la historia textual de la obra.

    The point of departure of the thesis is Vincenzo Consolo’s (S. Agata di Militello, Messina, 1933) novel Il sorriso dell’ignoto marinaio which was published for the first time in 1976 and from then on has continued to enjoy a strong readership and be the subject of specialized studies, unanimously gaining the recognition and condition of a modern classic in Italy and abroad. The novel has two versions in Castilian (1981, 2001) and has been translated into French (1980), German (1984), English (1994), and Catalan (2006).The specific focus of the thesis is its textual aspects and the gradual process of the creation of the novel.The final outcome is a critical edition of Il sorriso dell’ignoto marinaio which in its critical apparatus displays the progressive vicissitudes of the text and as such, provides the variae lectiones of all textual evidence, allowing for a reconstruction of the author’s creative process from the first annotations and notes to its publication as novel. The thesis therefore is made up of three sections. The first is an introduction which includes a) the description of all the textual evidence (published, typescripts and autograph manuscripts), b) the delineation of the history and development of the text, c) the reasons for the edition and the criteria adopted for its realization. The second section is made up of the critical edition itself of the novel which follows the methodological principles of genetic criticism, with the text accompanied by a double apparatus: the first is the textual variants, the second is commented notes. The third and final section is a dossier which includes the commented transcription of the autograph manuscripts, typescripts and other published materials, extremely important sources for the textual history of the novel.
