Resumen de A contribution to the study of epistemic lexical verbs as stance markers in the academic lectures of micase (michigan corpus of academic spoken english)

  • This dissertation is a contribution to the study of spoken academic speech, focusing on lectores -the most prototypical academic oralgene- in order to inquire finto the nature of epistemic lexical verbs (Hyland, 1998) as essential rhetorical features for encodingstance in academic lecturing speech in a selected corpus consisting of 62 lectores from the Michigan Corpus of Academic SpokenEnglish (MICASE). The dissertation explores the frequency as well as the context-sensitive variability of there verbs and provides apreliminary description of their lexico-grammatical patterns. Together with this exploratory aim, the investigation also attempts todescribe the pragmatic functioning of ELVs within lectores and explain their rhetorical functions in the academic spoken practices ofa representative North American university setting, the University of Michigan. In addition, by comparing university lectores and asmall referente corpus of research articles, it is determined whether there is any resemblance between the academic oral and writtenmodes regarding the multifunctional use of ELVs as stance markers in lecture talle.
