  • SUMMARY This thesis presents the construction process, development, and the psychometric evaluation of a prejudice scale perceived by Latin American immigrants in Spain, which is proposed from the groupal threat perspective.

Two decades have passed since the immigration phenomena began its influence in Spain. This phenomena has been criticized by the Spanish population due to the increase of the immigrant population and the socio-economic crisis the country has endured since 2008, resulting in prejudiced behaviour against foreigner groups.

Different studies have shown how the perception of threat with which this outgroup is perceived has influenced the relationship between these two groups, nationals and immigrants. The literature addressing this reality until this point has focused on the perspective of the dominant group (Spaniards), not being able to show a proximity that could allow for an understanding of this phenomena from the victim’s (foreigner) perspective.

With this in mind, a model is developed stating that immigrants can perceive the prejudice inflicted upon them due to the perspective of threat. Therefore, this document begins by reflecting on the elaboration of the dominant group’s prejudice toward immigrants framed in the theory of threat.

First, it is theoretically argued how the prejudice to consider immigrants a threat is structured, explaining this reality in Spain. After that, this argument is complemented by connecting this perception of threat with the public stigma, leading to interactions affected by stereotypes held by each group, which then results in the internalization of such stigmas associated to the immigrant’s condition.

In order to explore this reality, the objective of this thesis is to create a scale of prejudice perceived by Latin American immigrants in Spain from the perspective of threat and to analyze the relation with other psychosocial variables. The items were elaborated based on previous literature, going through a process of evaluation by experts to determine objectivity and, after that, were subject to an exhaustive psychometric evaluation.

A confirmatory factorial analysis was implemented in order to prove the factorial structure of the proposed scale. The results showed an ideal adjustment of two models: a one-dimensional model and one of two correlated factors. Because of the consulted literature, it was recommended to use a one-dimensional model, which had a higher internal consistency and an adequate convergent validity. This measurement of perceived prejudice was denominated internal groupal threat; the first results of this construct proved to be a good predictor of affective measurements of perceived emotions, both negative and positive ones.

The results show that the perceived prejudice by the victim can be reported from the perspective of threat. Thereby, the discussion mentions the validity of this study, where the implications of the findings are addressed and the importance of the generalization of these results are highlighted as well as the limitations of the study, suggestions made for further investigations, intervention strategies and migratory policies.

This scale is presented as a fundamental tool to study the perspective of the victim from the threat approach in Spain. It is expected that this tool allows further application of the theory of threat from the perspective of the victim and to be used as a complement to analyze the interaction between the Spanish population and immigrants in Spain.
