    El Ártico se ve cada vez más como un escenario para la proyección de poder. Durante las últimas décadas, el cambio climático y sus efectos han sido un importante motor de cambio para una región de globo antaño aislada de las tensiones internacionales entre las grandes potencias. Con el progresivo deshielo de la región, el “excepcionalismo” característico de la región ha desaparecido casi completamente. Rusia, consciente de que su flanco norte se vuelve vulnerable con un Ártico navegable, ha vuelto a militarizar sus bases de la época soviética, y cuenta con una flota de rompehielos que ensombrece las de todos sus vecinos. Un Ártico navegable traerá consigo la posibilidad de establecer una ruta comercial más corta y barata que la actual transitando Suez. Esta posibilidad, que terminará por convertirse en realidad tarde o temprano, hace que los estados árticos y otros más alejados estén invirtiendo en sus capacidades para poder formar parte del prometedor futuro de la región. España, siendo también consciente de ello, ha de tomar conciencia de su predisposición marítima y posicionarse adecuadamente, a fin de poder beneficiarse de las ventajas que traerá un Ártico navegable.

    The Arctic is increasingly seen as an arena to project power. Over the past decades, climate change and its effects have been a major driver of change for a region of the globe once isolated from international tensions between great powers. With the progressive melting of ice in the area, the “exceptionalism” characteristic of the region has almost completely disappeared. Aware that its northern flank becomes vulnerable with a navigable Arctic, Russia has re-militarised its Soviet-era bases, and has a fleet of icebreakers that overshadows those of all its neighbours. A navigable Arctic will bring with it the possibility of establishing a shorter and cheaper trade route than the current route through Suez. This possibility, which is bound to become a reality sooner or later, means that Arctic states and others further afield are investing in their capabilities in order to be part of the region’s promising future. Also aware of this, Spain must consider its maritime predisposition and position itself appropriately to be able to benefit from the advantages that a navigable Arctic will bring
