    Manuel Vázquez Montalbán se granjeó el logro de haber cultivado una extensa carrera literaria, habiendo desempeñado los roles de crítico, periodista, novelista y poeta, aunque esta última faceta quedaría eclipsada por la saga de Pepe Carvalho, protagonista de su ciclo en novela negra. No obstante, y debido al peculiar contexto socio-político en el que se gestó su producción, este reivindicó la cultura popular en todo su trabajo. La importancia de la subcultura queda justificada en su primera novela detectivesca, Tatuaje, cuyo título y trama se vincula con la copla homónima de Concha Piquer. Gracias a este caso, se reflexiona sobre la vida y obra de Vázquez Montalbán, para reivindicar el valor de una producción que, aunque él mismo llamara subnormal, posee un extraordinario valor para el estudio de la cultura española de aquellos años.

    Manuel Vázquez Montalbán earned the achievement of having cultivated an extensive literary career, having played the roles of critic, journalist, novelist and poet, although this last facet would be eclipsed by the saga of Pepe Carvalho, protagonist of his crime novel cycle. However, and due to the peculiar socio-political context in which his production took place, he vindicated popular culture in all his work. The importance of the subculture is justified in his first detective novel, Tatuaje, whose title and plot are linked to the homonymous couplet by Concha Piquer. Thanks to this case, he reflects on the life and work of Vázquez Montalbán, to vindicate the value of a production that, although he himself called it subnormal, has an extraordinary value for the study of Spanish culture of those years.
