We analyze the iconography of a painting with a mythological theme by David Teniers the Younger in the Museo Nacional de San Carlos in Mexico, of which there is a replica signed by a lo-cal architect, José María de Labastida, in 1783, now in the Denver Art Museum (usa), although the two works are entitled with two different titles and two different mythological references: Amphitrite in the original and Galatea in the copy. It suggests a syncretism that probably took place in the viceroyalty period in parallel to the treatments carried out by Miguel Cabrera in his mythological works and based on the theme of crossbreeding or miscegenation typical of «caste» painting.
