Carlos Neve, un ilustrador modernista olvidado

    Carlos Dionisio Neve fue un artista gráfico nacido en Xalapa, Veracruz, a finales del siglo XIX. En su estilo confluyen el simbolismo y el art nouveau, por lo que hay que ubicarlo junto a Julio Ruelas, Saturnino Herrán y Roberto Montenegro. El presente artículo tiene dos objetivos: 1) situar históricamente la obra de Carlos Neve; y 2) analizar algunas de sus estrategias como artista gráfico. No nos enfocamos tanto en la ‘gramática’ de las ilustraciones como en la relación de estas y su referente textual con los discursos culturales circundantes; es decir, enfatizamos el comentario de las imágenes desde la tradición estética e histórica.

    Carlos Dionisio Neve was a graphic artist born in Xalapa, Veracruz at the end of the 19th century. In his style, symbolism and art nouveau converge, which is why he should be placed next to Julio Ruelas, Saturnino Herrán and Roberto Montenegro. This article has two objectives: 1) to situate Carlos Neve's work historically and 2) to analyze some of his artistic strategies as a graphic artist. I do not focus so much on the "grammar" of the illustrations as on the relationship of the illustrations and their textual referent with the surrounding cultural discourses; that is, I approach the commentary of the illustrations from the artistic and historical tradition.
