Transtorno afetivo bipolar: desenvolvimento tardio e aspectos de vulnerabilidade na velhice

    The understanding and evaluation of mental disorders, such as Bipolar Affective Disorder, has been the focus of discussions about the specificities of different stages of life, such as old age. Attention is drawn to the importance of studies focusing on this population due to demographic changes in the population pyramid. In view of this, this study aimed to compile studies regarding Bipolar Affective Disorder in aging, consideringthe late development of the disorder and the implications for the elderly. To this end, a narrative investigation of the scientific literature available in the Scielo and PubMed databases was carried out. It was found that geriatric Bipolar Affective Disorder differs in terms of its late development when compared to its onset at other stages of life. Evidencing the interrelationship between geriatric Bipolar Affective Disorder and neurological functioning, the disorder being a factor that can aggravate cognitive deficits in the elderly. It was concluded that considering the stage of development of the disorder allows a better understanding of the psychiatric condition beyond the diagnostic criteria, since neuroanatomical, behavioral and affective changes can influence the onset of the disorder.

    A compreensão e avaliação dos transtornos mentais, como o Transtorno Afetivo Bipolar, tem sido foco em discussões sobre as especificidades de diferentes fases da vida, como a velhice. Chama-se a atenção para a importância de estudos com enfoque nessa população devido às mudanças demográficas na pirâmide populacional. Frente a isso, este estudo objetivou compilar estudos referentes ao Transtorno Afetivo Bipolar no envelhecimento, considerando o desenvolvimento tardio do transtorno e as implicações em pessoas idosas. Para tal, realizou-se uma investigação narrativa da literatura científica disponível nos bancos de dados Scielo e PubMed. Constatou-se que o Transtorno Afetivo Bipolar geriátrico se difere quanto ao seu desenvolvimento tardio quando comparado com seu surgimento em outros estágios da vida. Evidenciando a inter-relação entre o Transtorno Afetivo Bipolar geriátrico e o funcionamento neurológico, sendo o transtorno um fator que pode agravar quadros de déficits cognitivos em idosos. Concluiu-se que considerar a fase de desenvolvimento do transtorno permite uma melhor compreensão do quadro psiquiátrico para além dos critérios diagnósticos, posto que, as mudanças neuroanatômicas, comportamentais e afetivas podem influenciar o surgimento do transtorno.
