    El artículo explora los orígenes de la representación de la Trinidad en su versióntrifacial antropomorfa, su consolidación en la Edad Media y su declive en Euro-pa, durante el siglo XVI, luego de la Contrarreforma. Prohibida en Europa porconsiderársele herética y confusa para los fines pedagógicos de la iconografía ca-tólica, el tema trinitario floreció en América durante la segunda mitad del sigloXVII en variadas formas y adaptaciones. La prohibición se derivaba del hecho deque esta iconografía podía generar significados idolátricos al relacionar la repre-sentación del Espíritu Santo con manifestaciones religiosas animistas. El análisisse basa en un amplio corpus de imágenes recopiladas en varios contextos lati-noamericanos y, finalmente, identifica la persistencia de esta representación enel arte moderno mexicano.

    The article explores the origins of the representation of the trinity in its anthro-pomorphic trifacial version, its consolidation in the Middle Ages and its declinein Europe during the sixteenth century, after de Counter Reformation. Forbiddenin Europe as it was considered heretical and confusing for the pedagogical pur-poses of catholic iconography, the trinity theme flourished in America in variousforms and adaptations during the second half of the seventeenth century. Thisprohibition derived from the fact that it would have generated idolatrous mea-nings relating the representation of the Holy Spirit to animist religious represen-tations. The analysis is based on an ample corpus of images compiled from va-rious Latin American contexts and it, finally, identifies the persistence of this re-presentation in modern Mexican art.
