    The article aims to show how the slave system shaped the various relations in Brazil, and how citizenship, which should be manifested in a republican, universal way, with due respect to the established laws and the human person, was distorted by personal relationships, by the processes of domination and denial, either in relation to the slave, or in relation to the free and miserable men who constituted the absolute majority of the Brazilian population, creating the culture of favor that until today is rooted in social, political and legal practices, in total disagreement with republican principles and practices. The method adopted was analytic-deductive, using historical, sociological and legal material, from books and scientific articles, which were analyzed in the elaboration of the research.

    O artigo objetiva mostrar como o sistema escravista plasmou as várias relações no Brasil, e como a cidadania, que deveria se manifestar de forma republicana, universal, com o devido respeito às leis instituídas e à pessoa humana, foi enviesada por relações de natureza pessoal, por processos de dominação e negação, seja em relação ao escravo, seja em relação aos homens livres e miseráveis que constituíam a maioria absoluta da população brasileira, criando a cultura do favor que até hoje se encontra arraigada nas práticas sociais, políticas e jurídicas, em total descompasso com os princípios e práticas republicanos. O método adotado foi o analítico-dedutivo, valendo-se de material histórico, sociológico e jurídico, a partir de livros e artigos científicos, que foram analisados na elaboração da pesquisa.
