El megacolon tóxico es una grave complicación de las enfermedades inflamatorias intestinales que altera el funcionamien-to del intestino grueso. Aunque los raros reportes del origen de esta condición deriven del mal control de patologías como la de Crohn; o por infecciones del colon, por lo general, su causa radica en una colitis inflamatoria, isquémica o infecciosa. El trastorno consiste en el ensanchamiento del intestino grueso originado en pocos días que, aun siendo infrecuente, no deja de ser potencialmente fatal. El objetivo del presente estudio se centra en la aportación de un material bibliográfico ac-tualizado que sirva no solo para el fortalecimiento del conocimiento científico académico en relación al megacolon tóxico, su diagnóstico y tratamiento, sino también, como fundamento de futuras investigaciones. En razón de ello, se ha decidido adelantar un estudio de diseño bibliográfico con el cual recopilar varios criterios de tratadistas y expertos, mediante una metodología de revisión. La evidencia plasmada en los resultados incluye definiciones de megacolon tóxico, mención de sus principales síntomas y causas, y algunos los criterios diagnósticos y terapéuticos. Se concluye que el fundamento que determina el MT esta apoyado en tres aspectos: la historia clínica, los datos de respuesta inflamatoria sistémica y la evidencia imagenológica, principalmente radiográfica, de la dilatación colónica. En cuanto al tratamiento, las principales recomendaciones se centran en el bordaje multidisciplinar y el ingreso a la unidad de cuidados intensivos; mientras que el protocolo terapéutico se enfocará fundamentalmente en el tratamiento de la causa subyacente, la aplicación de medidas generales y, por último, en la cirugía

Toxic megacolon is a serious complication of inflammatory bowel diseases that disrupts the functioning of the large intes-tine. Although the rare reports of the origin of this condition derive from poor control of pathologies such as Crohn's; or by infections of the colon, in general, its cause lies in an inflammatory, ischemic or infectious colitis. The disorder consists of the widening of the large intestine originating in a few days which, although infrequent, is still potentially fatal. The objective of this study is focused on the contribution of an updated bibliographic material that serves not only to strengthen academic scientific knowledge in relation to toxic megacolon, its diagnosis and treatment, but also as a basis for future research. For this reason, it has been decided to carry out a bibliographic design study with which to compile various criteria from writers and experts, through a review methodology. The evidence reflected in the results includes definitions of toxic megacolon, mention of its main symptoms and causes, and some diagnostic and therapeutic criteria. It is concluded that the foundation that determines the TM is supported by three aspects: the clinical history, the systemic inflammatory response data and the imaging evidence, mainly radiographic, of colonic dilation. Regarding treatment, the main recommendations focus on mul-tidisciplinary embroidery and admission to the intensive care unit; while the therapeutic protocol will focus fundamentally on the treatment of the underlying cause, the application of general measures and, finally, on surgery
