Jesufina, a «mula»: história de uma reportagem sobre o humano. Ou as triangulações imperfeitas do transatlantismo

    Through transatlantic triangulation (Africa-America-Eu- rope) of a woman convicted of drug trafficking, we ad- dress the issue of emigration, gender issues crime and journalism. Jesufina was pregnant with her third daugh- ter when she traveled from Cape Verde to Brazil to stock up on the «packages» of cocaine she would be paid to transport. The mule, as women who carry and bring drugs in small amounts are known, was picked up at the airport. She will never return home. Nor to the minor chil- dren he left in Cape Verde. Sentenced to little less than five years in prison, she has the baby as a prisoner in the Tires Prison. This woman from Cabo Verde is just one of about 200 foreigners who inhabit the Portuguese seclu- sion system. In Portuguese prisons, these women repre- sent 18 percent of those convicted. Most have children, and many live with them in prison. Drug trafficking is the main cause of detention of foreign women in Portugal.

    They come mostly from Portuguese-speaking countries such as Brazil or Cape Verde (although also from Co- lombia or Romania). They represent the wrong motive for the closeness that sharing of the same language can mean. The poet Rudyard Kipling wrote: «All good peo- ple agree / And all good people say / All nice people, like Us, Are Us / And All Others Are They: / But if we cross the Sea, / Instead of... / You can end up (think of it) to seem We / Like just some kind of They!». If any stran- ger is seen as ‘He’, a stranger who has committed a cri- me, is black, is a woman and is pregnant, has everything against her. But Transatlantism is also made of these realities, with which there is much to learn. About Us and Others. Or just about the Others who are also Us.

    Através da triangulação transatlântica (África-Améri- ca-Europa) de uma mulher condenada por tráfico de droga, abordamos o problema da emigração, das questões de género, da criminalidade e do jornalismo.

    Jesufina estava grávida da terceira filha quando viajou de Cabo Verde para o Brasil, onde se abasteceria com os «pacotes» de cocaína que lhe pagariam para trans- portar. A «mula», como ficam conhecidas as mulheres que levam e trazem droga em pequenas quantidades, é apanhada no aeroporto. Nunca mais regressará a casa. Nem aos filhos menores que deixou em Cabo Verde. Condenada a cerca de cinco anos de prisão, tem o bebé como reclusa no Estabelecimento Prisional (EP) de Tires, perto de Lisboa. A Cabo Verdiana é ape- nas uma das cerca de 200 estrangeiras que povoam o sistema de reclusão português. Nas cadeias portugue- sas, estas mulheres representam cerca de 18 % das condenadas. A maioria tem filhos, e muitas vivem com eles na prisão. O tráfico de droga é a principal causa de detenções de mulheres estrangeiras em Portugal.

    Vêm maioritariamente de países de língua portugue- sa como Brasil ou Cabo Verde. Representam o motivo errado para a proximidade que a partilha da mesma língua pode significar. O poeta Rudyard Kipling escre- veu: «Todos as pessoas de bem concordam / E todas as pessoas de bem dizem / Todas as pessoas simpáti- cas, como Nós, São Nós / E todos os Outros são Eles:

    / Mas se atravessarmos o Mar, / Em vez de... / Podes acabar (pensa nisso) a parecer Nós / Como apenas uma espécie de Eles!». Se qualquer estranho é visto como «Ele», uma estranha que cometeu um crime, é negra, é mulher e está grávida, passa a ter tudo contra ela. Mas o Transatlantismo também se faz destas realidades, com as quais há muito para aprender. Sobre Nós e os Ou- tros. Ou apenas sobre os Outros que também são Nós.
