Determinación de metales pesados en aguas y sedimentos del Río Haina

    Elevados niveles de contaminación por metales pesados fueron encontrados en sedimentos del Río Haina. Se investigaron los niveles de concentración de metales pesados en las aguas y sedimentos del citado río, en las proximidades de la ciudad de Santo Domingo. Se tomaron muestras tanto de las aguas como de sedimentos en nueve puntos diferentes comprendidos entre la localidad de Manoguayabo y la desembocadura del río en Haina. La investigación se l levó a cabo durante un año, en el período comprendido entre Octubre del 2002 y Septiembre del 2003. Los metales investigados fueron Cobre, Niquel, Piorno, Hierro, Arsénico, Cadmio, Cromo y Zinc. En las aguas solo se encontraron los metales Hierro y Cobre y sus niveles de concentración estaban ubicados dentro de los estándares nacionales para aguas de ríos. Sin embargo, en el caso de los sedimentos, se comprobó la presencia de todos los metales investigados. En la mayoría de los casos los niveles de concentración encontrados se ubicaron por encima de los estándares para sedimentos. Los metales Cromo, Plomo, Hierro, Niquel y Cobre resultaron ser los de más altos niveles de concentración en sedimentos. Se observaron mayores niveles de concentración de metales pesados en los meses de verano e invierno.

    High levels of contamination by heavy metals were found in sediments of the Haina River. The concentration levels of heavy metals in the waters and sediments of the mentioned river, in the vicinity of the city of Santo Domingo, were investigated. Samples of both water and sediment were taken at nine different points between the town of Manoguayabo and the mouth of the river at Haina. The investigation was carried out for one year, in the period between October 2002 and September 2003. The metals investigated were Copper, Nickel, Piron, Iron, Arsenic, Cadmium, Chromium and Zinc. In the waters only the metals Iron and Copper were found and their concentration levels were located within the national standards for river waters. However, in the case of sediments, the presence of all the metals investigated was checked. In most cases the concentration levels found were above the standards for sediments. The metals Chromium, Lead, Iron, Nickel and Copper were found to be those with the highest concentration levels in sediments. Higher levels of heavy metal concentration were observed in the summer and winter months.
