La enseñanza de la gramática en la escuela de la Santa Capilla de San Andrés de Jaén

    La cofradía giennense de la Limpia Concepción de Nuestra Señora, más conocida como Santa Capilla de San Andrés, es una institución benéfica que tiene sus orígenes en 1515 y que fue fundada por el clérigo Gutierre González (1468?-1527), tesorero del Papa León X y protonotario apostólico. Al plantear su fundación, no solo atiende “al fomento y solemnidad del culto divino, sino que intenta cubrir algunas de las carencias sociales del Jaén de su tiempo: dotar doncellas para que contraigan matrimonio; vestir pobres y menesterosos y formar e instruir a los niños” (López Pérez 1998: 481). Precisamente, el objetivo de este trabajo consiste en descubrir, analizar y valorar el papel que jugó la enseñanza de la gramática en esta escuela gratuita. Nuestra investigación se enmarca dentro del estudio de la gramática escolar del español, a la que nos aproximamos desde la perspectiva “extraoficial” que, en el ámbito de esta institución, supuso la enseñanza a niños desamparados. Nos adentramos en el Archivo de la Santa Capilla de San Andrés para centrarnos particularmente en el siglo XIX, periodo en que, a pesar de la precaria situación de la enseñanza en Jaén, esta escuela sobrevive dignamente, a juicio de Sancho (2009) y Cruz y Sancho (2015).

    Jaén’s Confraternity Limpia Concepción de Nuestra Señora, better known as Santa Capilla de San Andrés, is a charitable institution that has its origins in 1515 and was founded by the clergyman Gutierre González (1468?-1527), treasurer of Pope León X and prothonotary apostolic. In proposing its foundation, not only does it pay attention “to the promotion and solemnity of divine worship, but also tries to cover some of the social deprivation of the Jaén of its time: by making maidens get married; dressing the poor and needy; and educating and instructing children” (López Pérez 1998: 481). The aim of this paper is precisely to discover, analyse and evaluate the role that grammar teaching played in this free school. Our research is framed within the study of the Spanish school grammar, to which we approach from the “unofficial” perspective that meant the teaching of unprivileged children in the scope of this institution. We study thoroughly the Archives of Santa Capilla de San Andrés to focus particularly on the 19th century, a period in which this school survives with dignity despite the precarious educational situation in Jaén, according to Sancho (2009) and Cruz and Sancho (2015).
