    The present article proposes a brief overview over the theory of the surrounding fields by Eugenio Coseriu, that, to almost 60 years of its first publication as part of what would be his “Linguistics of speaking”, still offers material for discussion in regard to its origin, the categories on which it is based and the problems involved, as well as some more recent attempts to reformulate them. We will focus especially on the particular theme of the “region” to present it by means of a concrete example that shows the analytical possibilities of this category for the linguistic historiography, the most polemic of Coserius’ whole theory of the surrounding fields.
