    Tradicionalmente, en Siria, como en otras regiones árabes, diversas «qabila» o confederaciones tribales, y «ashira» o clanes tribales, han tenido enemistades que se remontan más allá del periodo otomano. En época de Asad padre, Hafiz al-Asad, esta rivalidad de acrecentó en diversas de estas tribus transnacionales, bien por su origen, «bedu» (criadores de camellos) o no, así como por su oposición o apoyo al régimen.

    La guerra civil siria abrió de nuevo estas viejas heridas; especialmente en el escenario rural, las tribus han sido determinantes en ciertos territorios para acelerar el control del régimen o la rebelión armada contra este.

    Traditionally, in Syria, as in other Arab regions, various ‘qabila’ or tribal confederations and ‘ashira’ or clans had enmities that go back in time beyond the Ottoman period.

    In times of father Asad, Hafiz al-Asad, this rivalry had increased between several of these transnational tribes, either because of their origin, ‘bedu’ (camel herder) or not, or even if they were opposed or supporters for the regime.

    The Syrian civil war reopened those old wounds. Especially in the rural scenario, the tribes have been determinants in certain territories in accelerating the control of the regime or armed rebellion against it.
