    J. S. Mill abordó por primera vez la legitimidad de las intervenciones en guerras extranjeras en su texto The Spanish Question. Comienzo explicando el contexto histórico de ese texto y sus tesis sobre la Primera Guerra Carlista. La sección principal del artículo se dedica a los principios sobre el intervencionismo formulados en The Spanish Question, y a mostrar que Mill defendió en adelante tales principios con apenas modificaciones. Como conclusión defiendo que el Concierto Europeo establecido por el Congreso de Viena de 1815 es el trasfondo necesario para entender las ideas de Mill como un proyecto realista de moralizar el balance internacional de poder.

    J. S. Mill addressed for the first time the legitimacy of interventions in foreign wars in his The Spanish Question. I begin by explaining the historical context of that text and its thesis about the First Carlist War. The main section of the article is devoted to the principles on war interventionism stated in The Spanish Question and to show that Mill endorsed those principles with rather few modifications henceforth. As a concluding remark I hold that the Concert of Europe established by 1815 Congress of Vienna is the adequate background to appreciate Mill’s ideas as a realist project of moralizing the international balance of power.
