    Considerando a multiplicidade de facetas do fenômeno alfabetização, o artigo discute algumas das principais perspectivas sob as quais esse fenômeno pode ser estudado, agrupando-as sob três categorias: o conceito de alfabetização, a natureza do processo de alfabetização (aspectos psicológico, psicolingüístico, sociolingüístico e propriamente lingüístico) e os condicionantes desse processo (pressupostos sociais, culturais e políticos). Apontam-se as implicações das diferentes perspectivas para os problemas de método, material didático, definição de pré-requisitos e formação do alfabetizador, e defende-se a necessidade de uma teoria coerente da alfabetização, que concilie resultados e integre estruturadamente estudos sobre as diferentes facetas do processo.

    This article deals with some of the main prospects under which the phenomenon of teaching how to read and write a native language may be studied. These prospects involve the multiple aspects of the phenomenon itself and group them into three categories: a) the definition of "literacy", b) the nature of this process - psychological, psycholinguistic, sociolinguistic and linguistic - and c) the conditioning factors of this process, that is to say: social, cultural and political pressupositions. The implications of those prospects re pointed out in order to try to solve problems as metholodogy, use of didactic materials, setting up of the requeriments ans skills needed by the learner, training of teachers. It defends the necessity of a coherent theory in dealing with the teaching of how to read and write a native language. Such a theory must not only reconcile the results but also interact studies about the aspects of the process in a structured form.
