O modelo italianizante no Sul de Portugal (século XVI): o caso do castelo de Vila Viçosa

    This article aims to present the context that emerged in Portugal, the interest in treatises and in the influence of the italian masters, at a time when defense projects and fortifications were particulary relevant to the political and economic interests to the portuguese monarchs. The interaction between learners and teachers has become indispensable for the defense of overseas territories, highlighting the case of portuguese fortification of Mazagan. In Habsburgo’s period, it was common the exchange of knowledge between portuguese and italian masters, working together in the reformulation of the portuguese defenses, particulary with regard to the Alentejo and Algarve. Noteworthy is the relevant case of Vila Viçosa, whose plan clearly shows the influence of the italian’s defense model.

    O presente artigo visa dar a conhecer o contexto em que surgiu, em Portugal, o interesse pela tratadística e a influência dos mestres italianos, num período em que os projetos de defesa e fortificação tinham cada vez mais interesse no plano político e económico. Tornava-se imprescindível a interação entre aprendizes e mestres para a defesa dos territórios ultramarinos, destacando-se o caso da Fortaleza de Mazagão. No período dos Áustrias foi comum a troca de saberes entre portugueses e italianos, chamando-se à Corte engenheiros italianos para participarem nas reformulações das suas defesas, nomeadamente no que respeita à região do Alentejo e Algarve. Destaca-se, neste contexto, o caso do castelo de Vila Viçosa, cuja planta mostra claramente a influência do modelo italianizante de defesa.
