    Murillo realizó varias pinturas del Niño Jesús dormido sobre la cruz, creando una serie de modelos iconográficos que fueron muy seguidos. Aunque es un tema en auge en la Contrarreforma, sus orígenes se encuentran en las visiones de santas, en los textos religiosos y literarios y en la adaptación de otras tipologías iconográficas de origen pagano, alegórico y religioso. En este artículo se rastrean los orígenes de la iconografía del Niño Jesús dormido y su presencia en la obra del pintor español Murillo.

    Murillo made several depictions of the Infant Christ sleeping on the cross, thus creating a wildly followed series of iconographic models. Although it is a growing issue in the Counter-Reformation, its origins can be traced back to some saints’ visions, several religious and literary texts, and also in the adaptation of other pagan, allegorical and religious iconographic typologies. This paper studies the origin of this iconography and the model created by Spanish painter Murillo.
