    Theophylact Simocatta, devoted a large digression in his "History" to the various theories existing at this time about the origin of the annual flood of the Nile river. While critically refuting most of them, he agreed with the theory of Agatharcides of Cnide, a geographer of the second century B.C. whose work is largely lost. According to Agatharchides the flood of the Nile was due to the early summer rains on the Ethiopian plateau, and this is in fact the correct answer. The present paper is a critical presentation and examination of these theories, as reported by Theophylact Simocatta.

    Théophylacte Simocattès a consacré une importante digression dans son "Histoire" aux différentes théories ayant cours à son époque sur l'origine des crues du Nil. Critiquant et réfutant la plupart de ces théories, il accepte celle d'Agatharcide de Cnide, un géographe du deuxième siècle avant J.C., dont la majeure partie de l'oeuvre est perdue. Selon cet auteur, les crues du Nil étaient dues aux pluies du début de l'été sur le plateau éthiopien, ce qui du reste est la bonne réponse. Le présent article est un examen critique de ces théories, comme nous les rapporte Théophylacte Simocattès.
