Paradigma de artisticidad, estiticidad e identidad en la obra de plásticos caribeños (1860-1960)

    Se estudia la obra de 12 pintores antillanos -puertorriqueños, cubanos y dominicanos-, que se inscribe en el periodo comprendido desde los años 60 del siglo XIX hasta los años 60 del siglo XX, y revela una riqueza artística envidiable, sostenida y sólida. Estos artistas se aferran a la representación figurativa de lo que les rodea, enmarcados en un realismo con acento nostálgico en ocasiones. Lo más significativo son los temas que tratan: el paisaje, ante todo, y con ello, la reverencia hacia la naturaleza como diosa suprema de la inspiración artística; además del tema histórico, consustancial a la Academia: el retrato de figuras queridas y admiradas, trascendentes en la historia de estos pueblos, así como la recreación de escenas de extraordinario valor testimonial. La plástica, en este periodo de frustraciones y desengaños, cumplió uno de sus cometidos: contribuyó a robustecer la conciencia nacional.

    The work of 12 Antillean painters from Cuba, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic is studied. This work dates from the period comprised between the 60´s of the 19th Century and the 60´s of the 20th Century. This work unveils a sustained, solid and enviable artistic wealth. These artists cling on to the figurative representation of their surroundings, framed in a realism that has an occasional nostalgic tone. The most outstanding features are, firstly, the topics they deal with: mainly the landscape, which reflects the reverence to nature as supreme goddess of artistic inspiration; and secondly the historical topic, consistent with the Academy: the portrait of admired and beloved figures which were relevant to the history of these people. Their work also captures scenes of extraordinary testimonial worth. During this period of frustration and disappointment, the plastic arts achieved one of its tasks: it helped to strengthen national consciousness.
