This paper aims at discussing how the labels of � fo rmer union leader�, � former lathe turner� and � first leftist president� �ascribed to Luiz Ináci o Lula da Silva� are employed and contextu- alized by The New York Times, in its covering of Bra zilian 2006 presidential elections. It is based on the theoretical and methodological foundations of Discourse Analysis and focus on aspects such as the lexical choices, the irony, the intertext uality and the interdiscursivity in the composi- tion of discursive strategies. It indicates that suc h labels are utilized in contexts predominantly negative to the president candidate, with emphasis o n scandals and political incoherence
Este trabalho objetiva discutir como os rótulos de �ex-sindic alista�, �ex-torneiro mecânico� e �primeiro presidente de esquerda� �atribuídos a Luiz Ináci o Lula da Silva� são empregados e contextualizados pelo New York Times, em sua cobertura das eleições presidenciais de 2006, no Brasil. Alicerça-se nos fundamentos teórico-metodológic os da Análise do Discurso e enfoca aspectos como as escolhas lexicais, a ironia, a intertextual idade e a interdiscursividade na composição das estratégias discursivas. Aponta que tais rótu los são utilizados em contextos predominantemente negativos para o candidato presidente, com ênfase em escândalos e em incoerência política.
