    Este artículo presenta los diversos procesos de reforma policial desarrollados en América Latina en la última década. Sin lugar a dudas, en un continente marcado por el aumento de la violencia y la criminalidad, las policías adquieren un rol central en la gobernabilidad nacional. Así, el retorno de la democracia ha generado una mayor dependencia gubernamental hacia las policías, principal institución encargada del orden y la estabilidad pública, pero éste no se ha visto complementado por un cambio institucional que conlleve mayores niveles de profesionalización y eficacia

    This article presents the diverse processes of police reform developed in Latin America in the last decade. Without doubt, in a continent marked by the increase of the violence and the criminality, the police acquire a central roll in the national governability. Thus, the return of the democracy has generated a greater governmental dependency towards the police, the main institution in charge of the order and the public stability; but this has not been complemented by an institutional change that entails higher levels of professionalization and effectiveness
