This volume includes nine papers chosen among those presented at the Symposium on Contemporary Catalonia in Spain and Europe, held by the Gaspar de Portolà Catalonian Studies Program of International and Area Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, on 24-25 Februrary 1989.
The symposium was intended as an international forum focusing on the relationship of present day Catalonia, an Autonomous Community of the Spanish state, with the rest of Spain, on the one hand and with Europe, on the other. It emphasized issues involved with integration into the European Community. Participants gathered from American, Canadian, and Catalan institutions who presented research and descriptive papers on language, science and technology, and the social sciences.
