Durante las últimas décadas del siglo XIX, surgieron los primeros proyectos de urbanización que expandieron el área de Bogotá mucho más allá de sus límites coloniales. En este libro el autor, Enrique Martínez, investiga aquellas que fueron promovidas por Juan Clímaco Arbeláez Gómez, Paulino Rosas Esteban y Enrique Pardo Roche, quienes muy temprano se aventuraron en esta prometedora empresa. Gracias a esto, ellos progresivamente encarnaron la figura del “urbanizador capitalista”, es decir, del empresario que busca generar utilidades al transformar terrenos rurales en lotes urbanos. El minucioso análisis de las escrituras y la cartografía histórica de la ciudad, en el que se apoya, aborda por primera vez algunos casos desconocidos, como el de Barro Colorado y el poblado de Tunjuelito, y ofrece nuevos detalles de otros ya estudiados, como los Lotes de Chapinero, una contribución novedosa a la historiografía sobre Bogotá.

During the last decades of the nineteenth century, the first urbanization projects emerged that expanded the Bogotá area far beyond its colonial limits. In this book, the author, Enrique Martínez, investigates the projects promoted by Juan Clímaco Arbeláez Gómez, Paulino Rosas Esteban, and Enrique Pardo Roche, who ventured into this promising enterprise very early on. Thanks to this, they progressively embodied the figure of the “capitalist urban developer,” a businessman who seeks to generate profit by transforming rural land into urban lots. The meticulous analysis of the deeds and the historical cartography of the city—on which it is based—addresses for the first time some unknown cases, such as Barro Colorado and the town of Tunjuelito, and offers new details on others already studied, such as the Lots of Chapinero, a novel contribution to the historiography of Bogotá.
