Resumen de El arte del reloj en las manos del lector: Impresos de relojería mecánica en el mundo hispánico del siglo XVIII

La consulta del reloj no es una práctica simple ni espontánea, y mucho menos una manía adquirida únicamente por la «disciplina de trabajo y el capitalismo industrial». Esto es lo que nos viene a iluminar el estudio de una serie de im-presos que se produjeron y circularon en España y América. Tratados, manua-les, artículos de prensa y papeles sueltos que hasta cierto punto revelaron los secretos del relojero, al tiempo que recogieron, acreditaron o refutaron las no-ciones populares que circulaban en torno al reloj. Con este material se pone en suspenso las hipótesis adoptadas de la historiografía anglosajona, para abrirle espacio a una visión que permite entender cómo diferentes individuos ubicados en ambas partes del mundo, ajenos al régimen fabril y sin otro nexo en común que la posesión de relojes, se vincularon al campo de la cronometría, convinie-ron en las mismas técnicas y en conjunto configuraron un tiempo sintético a escala global.

The use of the watch is not a simple or spontaneous practice, much less a habit acquired only by the «Work-Discipline and Industrial Capitalism». This is what allows us to question the study of a series of printed materials that were produ-ced and circulated in Spain and Latin America during the 18th century. Trea-tises, manuals, press articles and sheets that revealed the secret knowledge of the watchmakers, and simultaneously it served to reproduce, accredit, or refute the popular assumptions that circulated about the clock. With this material we review the hypotheses adopted from Anglo-Saxon historiography to fathom how different individuals in both sides of the world, outside the factories and only connected by the possession of clocks, were linked to the field of timekeeping, agreed on the same techniques, and collectively configured a synthetic and glo-bal time.
