This book brings together the scientific findings and theoretical considerations that emerged from the Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) entitled: “Green/Blue/Grey integration for climate adaptive urban design”. It was an international training and research initiative involving the Università degli Studi della Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli” (Italy), the Universidad de Sevilla (Spain), and the University of Ioannina (Greece), which designated the urban space and the contemporary landscape as prime laboratories for experimentation. Faced with the systemic challenges posed by climate change, biodiversity loss, and the ecological transition that can no longer be postponed, the design of the built environment now requires a radical paradigm shift. It is no longer simply a matter of mitigating human impact, but of co-designing regenerative solutions capable of blending technology, nature and historical memory.
The academic contributions gathered in this publication are organised around three fundamental themes: the technological decarbonisation of the built environment, the resilient design of the urban landscape, and the formal and conceptual reinterpretation of public space. The book provides contributions on the three aspects mentioned above and includes other related topics, though these are always guided by the same logic. Furthermore, a specific section of the book brings together and focuses on the outcomes of the design workshop carried out by the participating students, demonstrating the practical and interdisciplinary application of the theoretical models explored. Ultimately, this book is not merely a collection of academic papers but aims to serve as a collective manifesto. Through dialogue between universities in different countries, the BIP has sought to demonstrate that the future of the built environment lies in the ability to combine the precision of scientific culture with the ecological and humanistic sensibilities of landscape design.
