The volume is dedicated to Stefano Maso, Full Professor of Ancient Philosophy, Director of the Research Center "Ancient Philosophy in Venice" at the Department of Philosophy and Cultural Heritage of Ca' Foscari University of Venice until Octiber 2024, and current board member of the Italian Society for the History of Ancient Philosophy. He was also, for many years, president of the Venetian section of the Italian Philosophical Society. The book brings together numerous contributions from esteemed colleagues, friends, former students, and collaborators who have had the pleasure of working with him on various prestigious scholarly initiatives. In particular, the volume aims to develop some of the research themes explored by Stefano Maso throughout his career, such as the status, object, modes of acquisition, formalization, expression, and transmission of knowledge -its limits and practical implications- both in the Greek and Latin worlds. The volume includes a bio-bibliography of Stefano Maso and is organized into three parts: The Origins of Episteme, which explores the conditions under which philosophical knowledge originated and developed in its various forms; Forms, Objects, and Methods of Episteme, which addresses the foundation of science in various fields, starting from the definition of its content, goals, and rational and discursive procedures; Forms, Limits, and Applications of Rationality, which deals with the translation and transition of Greek episteme into Latin ratio.
