    La crisis de fin de siglo afectó a la sociedad en su conjunto y, por tanto, a cada uno de sus integrantes. Parecería como si, al margen de los artistas y escritores agrupados en la Generación del 98, los demás miembros de la sociedad española se limitaran a sufrir la crisis, más que a sentirla y a a tratar de interpretarla, por el hecho de que no dejaran testimonio escrito de sus pensamientos, cuando lo que ocurre es que, sin más, es muy difícil saber hoy qué pensaba exactamente de la situación un oscuro pero inteligente oficinista. Leopoldo Gutiérrez Abascal fue un excepcional sujeto de esta clase.

    The crisis of the end of the century affected society as a whole and therefore each of its members. It would seem that, apart from the artists and writers grouped in the Generation of 98, the other members of Spanish society limited themselves to suffering the crisis, rather than attempting to interpret it, as they did not leave written testimony of their thoughts. In fact it is very difficult to know today what exactly an obscure but intelligent office worker thought about the situation. Leopoldo Gutiérrez Abascal was an exceptional subject of this class.
