    Juan Antonio de Zunzunegui y Loredo escribió en 1963: “Yo vi la luz cerca del puente de Vizcaya. Mi padre en el Desierto - Baracaldo y mi madre en la Plaza Nueva de Bilbao, en una casa que era de mi abuelo Miguel de Loredo, apoderado de Portugalete en las Juntas Forales de Guernica a los 22 años... No puedo ser más hijo de esta ría... que trayéndola ahora hasta mis ojos desde la punta del muelle de Portugalete me avasalla con su descomunal y enorme poderío...” Estas palabras, resumen toda una actitud vital entregada a la tierra que le vio nacer, un 21 de diciembre de 1900.

    En muchas ocasiones, escribe Zunzunegui sobre la ría, y también sobre el cielo. En ellos encuentgra el verdadero estímulo a su creación, porque en su obra cielo y ría se revisten de caracteres místicos, y como el mito es historia vehicula a través de ellos los hechos de su tiempo.

    Honela idatzi zuen Juan Antonio de Zuznzunegui y Losadak 1963an: “Bizkaiko zubitik hurbil ikusi nuen argia lehenengoz. Aitak Barakaldoko Desertuan eta amak Bilboko Plaza Barrian, 22 urterekin Gernikako Batzarretan Portugaleteko ahalduna zen nire aitita Miguel de Loredorenaren etxean. Itsasadarraren semea halabeharrez…Portugaleteko kaitik ikusten dudadena azpiratu egiten nau bere ikaragarrizko indar itzelaz…”hitz hauek, 1900eko abenduaren 21ean jaiotzen ikusi zuen herriari emandako bizi-jardun osoa laburtzen dute.

    Sarritan idatzi du Zunzuneguik itsasadarrari eta zeruari buruz. Han aurkitzen baitu sormen-iturria, izan ere, bere obran zerua eta itsasadarra ikutu mistikoekin janzten

    Juan Antonio de Zunzunegui y Loredo wrote in 1963: “I was born close to the bridge of Vizcaya. My father was born in El Desierto-Baracaldo and my mother in the Plaza Nueva of Bilbao, in a house that belonged to my grandfather Miguel de Loredo, who represented Portugalete at the Juntas Forales of Guernica at 22 years of age... It would be impossible to be more closely related to this estuary... which flows before my eyes at the end of the quay of Portugalete and overwhelms me with its monstrous and enormous power...” These words summarise a vital attitude of dedication to the land where he had been born on December 21st 1900.

    On many occasions, Zunzunegui wrote about the estuary and also about the sky. In both he found the true stimulus for his creativity, since in his work sky and estuary are filled with mystical characters and, since myth is history, through them he organises the events of his time.
