    La aventura de un futuro compartido, el gran objetivo de la Unión Europea, sólo podrá alcanzarse si va más allá de la dimensión jurídico-política. De su patrimonio forman parte esencial los valores que han servido de fundamento al proyecto comunitario. También lo proclama el preámbulo de la Carta de Los Derechos Fundamentales de la UE: "la Unión sitúa a la persona y sus derechos en el centro de la integración". Sin embargo, parte de la sociedad civil europea muestra una actitud crítica hacia el proyecto. Quizá el impulso que necesita pasa por entender los valores en toda su dimensión, y aplicarlos con una mayor decisión. En el respeto y promoción de la persona y su dignidad, que fundamentan el reto democrático, se juega la Unión Europea su credibilidad, no sólo frente al mundo, sino principalmente ante sus propios ciudadanos.

    The adventure of a shared future, the European Union's main objective, can only be achieved beyond the legal-political dimension. Indeed, the integration project is based on essential values that are part and parcel of its heritage. The prologue to the EU Fundamental Rights Charter also proclaims that "the Union places the person and his or her rights at the centre of the integration process". Nevertheless, part of the European civil society also shows a critical attitude toward the project. Comprehending the values in all their depth and applying them with a greater conviction could give the project the impulse needed. The credibility of the EU, not only to the world but also to its citizens, depends on the respect and promotion of the person and his or her dignity, which are the basis of the so called "democratic challenge" of the EU.
