    Las ciudades son algo más que un conjunto de edificios y calles. Junto a las piedras y el hormigón sus habitantes las construyen de sueños y recuerdos. Cuando Bilbao, a finales del siglo XIX, se convirtió en una ciudad moderna e industrial, se redefinió por medio de lo nuevo, pero también a través de sus olvidos. Su actitud respecto a los monumentos del pasado se tornó selectiva, despertando críticas y nostalgias. Antonio Trueba o Miguel de Unamuno, entre otros, evocaron un Bilbao individual poblado de ausencias, espacios tan significativos como los construidos.

    �Guztiok daramagu hiri bat sakonean� XIX mende bukaeran, espazio galduak eta gogoratuak Hiri bat eraikinak eta kaleak baino zerbait gehiago dira. Bertako biztanleak harriak eta ormigoia ametsez eta oroimenez betetzen dituzte. XIX mendearen bukaeran hiri industriala bihurtu zenean hiri modernoaren itxura hartu zuen baina aldi berean ahazturak eragin zituen. Beste mende batzuetako monumentuak bereizi egin zituen eta portaera kontrajarriak sortu zituzten. A. Truebak eta M. Unamunok gizabanakoen Bilbo gogoratu zuten baina hutsunez betea zena. Hutsuneak eraikinak besteko garrantzia zuten.

    Cities are more than just a set of buildings and streets. Along with stone and cement their inhabitants construct them out of dreams and memories. When Bilbao became a modern industrial city at the end of the nineteenth century, it was redefined in terms of novelty, but also in terms what was forgotten. The attitude to monuments of the past became selective, giving rise to criticism and nostalgia. Amongst others, Antonio Trueba and Miguel de Unamuno evoked an industrial Bilbao populated by absences, spaces as significant as those that had been built up.
