Our experience of electronic and digital screens can be considered as the pars pro toto of that ‘device’ (in the broad socio-cultural meaning attributed to this term by Foucault) that is enveloping us.For this reason, I consider it decisive to elaborate what I would call an anthropology of screens, to which I believe the heuristic value offered by what I have proposed to define ‘screen-arches’ can contribute, to be understood as a ‘theme’ or trans-historical principle in which two pairs of functions intersect: not only that of hiding and showing at the same time, with which screens are normally identified, but also that which consists in exposing and at the same time protecting, thus mediating our overall bodily (and not only visual) relationship with the environment. In any case, the principle just defined contributes to producing, in different cultural-historical contexts, different regimes of visibility. In turn, each of these is intertwined with a certain regime of sayability and together they direct the attention and inattention of our gazes as much as those of our discourses. In this regard, the display -whose name today tends to flank or even replace the word ‘screen’, attributing to the surface it designates the exclusive function of displaying -proves emblematic of today's regimes of visibility and sayability. Indeed, it helps to affirm the ideology of what Iironically classify as ‘Transparency 2.0’. This ideology identifies the meaning of transparency with the alleged absence of any mediation and thus carries implications of great political significance as well.
