Resumen de Códice Madrid I: Un análisis de los mecanismos del primer tratado completo de sistemas mecánicos

  Desde que en 1965 se encontraron en la Biblioteca Nacional de España los Códices Madrid I y Madrid II, escritos por Leonardo da Vinci entre finales del siglo XV e inicios del siglo XVI, han pasado a ser manuscritos muy considerados, tanto por el contenido de los mismos como por el gran prestigio de su autor. En este artículo se realizará una inspección del manuscrito del Códice Madrid I, una extensa colección de dibujos de sistemas mecánicos de Leonardo da Vinci, donde se presentarán resumidamente la vida del autor y su obra y se analizarán detalladamente los principales mecanismos que aparecen en dicho códice. También se situarán en su contexto histórico las obras escritas de Leonardo y, en particular, el Códice Madrid I, analizando los registros de tecnología mecánica anteriores a los tiempos de Leonardo da Vinci y estudiando las referencias escritas históricas existentes. La parte principal del trabajo consistirá en una recopilación de los dibujos de los principales y más representativos mecanismos del Códice Madrid I. Con esta recopilación se demostrará la variedad de elementos mecánicos y mecanismos simples del citado códice, que forman, en su conjunto, un completo tratado sobre mecanismos, entendiendo los mecanismos como elementos básicos de las máquinas. Esta completa descripción de dispositivos mecánicos constituye la principal aportación de Leonardo da Vinci a la historia de las máquinas y los mecanismos.

  Since the Madrid I and Madrid II Codices, written by Leonardo da Vinci between the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century, were found in the Spain National Library in 1965, they have become highly regarded manuscripts, both for their own content as well as the great prestige of the author. In this article, an inspection of the manuscript of the Codex Madrid I will be carried out, an extensive collection of drawings of mechanical systems by Leonardo da Vinci. The life of the author and his work will be briefly presented and the main mechanisms that appear in that codex will be analyzed in detail. The written works by Leonardo and, in particular, the Codex Madrid I will also be placed in their historical context, analyzing the records of mechanical technology prior to the time of Leonardo da Vinci and studying the existing historical written references. The main part of the work consists of a compilation of the drawings of the main and most representative mechanisms of the Codex Madrid I. With this compilation the variety of mechanical elements and simple mechanisms of the aforementioned codex will be demonstrated, which together form a complete treatise on mechanisms, understanding mechanisms as basic elements of machines. This complete description of mechanical devices constitutes Leonardo da Vinci’s main contribution to the history of machines and mechanisms.
