This article analyzes the metacommunication inherent to the sports game. It starts with the definition of sport as a game linked to metalanguage: sport is a metagame and is constituted thanks to the initial metacommunication originated around the primitive game. Following Hans-Georg Gadamer’s perspective, it contemplates the otherness in human game: the other is always necessary to play, whether it is another person, the air friction or the ground unevenness. The different metacommunicative levels in the sports game are described, establishing the analogy between sport and the in itinere arts (moving, performing) and highlighting their agonal character. Finally, the notion of aesthetic-hermeneutic spiral is proposed, which includes the internal dynamics of both the sporting fact and artistic events.
