  El Inventario Ecológico y Forestal de Catalunya (IEFC) fue concebido y realizado entre 1988 y 1998 por el Centre de Recerca Ecològica i Aplicacions Forestals. A diferencia de otros inventarios forestales, éste incorpora variables de tipo ecológico que permiten un enfoque funcional de los bosques. Los datos recogidos durante el muestreo de 10.644 estaciones, repartidas al azar por los bosques de Catalunya, y su posterior proceso generó una base de datos relacional con más de 2.000.000 de registros. La publicación de los resultados se estructura en 9 volúmenes, 8 de los cuales corresponden a las llamadas Regiones Forestales establecidas en el Pla General de Política Forestal de la Generalitat de Catalunya y un noveno donde se describe la metodología de campo y laboratorio y el cálculo de diversas variables. Paralelamente se publican en Internet los mismos resultados para su consulta en línea. Cada volumen (excepto el de métodos) empieza con una sinopsis de los bosques de la región, su proporción respecto a otros tipos de cubiertas del suelo, las especies arbóreas más abundantes y su distribución según la orografía, por comarcas, por municipios y por los espacios protegidos presentes, distribución de los modelos de combustible y de inflamabilidad, etc; apartados que son tratados después con mayor detenimiento. De las especies más representativas de cada región se da información tabular y/o gráfica de su distribución según la orografía y de las estaciones donde la especie está presente y donde domina, las existencias por clases diamétricas, la estructura de las masas boscosas, biomasa, volumen y producción de las fracciones aéreas, la regeneración, indicadores dendrométricos y tarifas de cubicación. Acompaña a cada volumen el Mapa de Cubiertas del Suelo (cartografía de 1993 utilizada para el cálculo de superficies) de la región que permite ver la distribución de las masas boscosas y su grado de fragmentación o continuidad. En conjunto, la edición en papel y el apoyo en Internet hacen de esta publicación una herramienta útil de consulta sobre el estado de los bosques catalanes.

  The Ecological and Forest Inventory of Catalonia (IEFC) was designed and carried out between years 1988 and 1998 by the Centre de Recerca Ecològica i Aplicacions Forestals. Unlike other forest inventories, this one includes ecological variables which allow us a functional view of the forests.The data gathered during the sampling of 10.644 plots (randomly distributed throughout the Catalan forest area) and their later process generated a relational database with more than 2.000.000 of records.The publishing of the results is organised in 9 books, 8 of which corresponding to the so-called Forest Regions decreed in the Pla General de Política Forestal (Generalitatde Catalunya) and a ninth one where it is described the methodology used in the fulfilment of the IEFC and later calculations. At the same time these results are published online. Each book (except the one of methodology) begins with a summary of the forest conditions, the ratio between forest cover and other land covers, the more plentiful tree species and their distribution by districts or according to orography or protected areas, distribution of fuel and flammability models, etc; subjects which are developed lately. The information of the more representatives species in each region is: tabular and/or graphical information about their distribution according to the orography, the number of sampling plots where the specie is present and where it predominates, the stocks by diametric classes, the structure of the forest, values of biomass, volume and production of the aerial fractions (stem, branches, leaves), regeneration, etc. Each book has attached the Land Cover Map of the region which allows to know the distribution of the forests and their state of fragmentation or continuity.The publishing and the online support, altogether, make this publication a useful tool for a better management of the Catalan forests.
