    Este artículo presenta un panorama general de lo que conceptualmente se entiende por seguridad social; se enfatiza en el hecho de que el surgimiento de la misma, obedece a la necesidad de que en principio, el Estado es el ente que debe otorgar beneficios y servicios que permitan compensar al individuo la pérdida en parte de sus ingresos, proveniente de la inseguridad económica. Presenta también, un panorama de la forma en que la seguridad social ha venido evolucionando alrededor del mundo y la forma en que los modelos de seguridad social han venido siendo adoptados en América Latina y en México. Así mismo, alude al hecho cierto de que la seguridad social es un sistema cambiante que se adapta a la situación específica de cada Nación y que aparece como un derecho en la mayoría de las Constituciones de los Estados modernos.

    This article presents a general overview of what is conceptually understood by social security; it emphasizes the fact that its emergence is due to the need that, in principle, the State is the entity that must provide benefits and services that allow the individual to compensate for the loss of part of his income, resulting from economic insecurity. It also presents an overview of the way in which social security has been evolving around the world and the way in which social security models have been adopted in Latin America and Mexico. Likewise, it alludes to the fact that social security is a changing system that adapts to the specific situation of each nation and that appears as a right in most of the Constitutions of modern States.
