Un Encàrrec de l'infant Pere d'Aragó i d'Anjou a Ferrer Bassa el 1346: el Saltiri anglocatalà

    This paper presents some unpublished documents related to an illuminated manuscript which was illustrated in Catalonia in the 14th century. The patron of this artwork was a member of the royal family, Infante Peter of Aragon and Anjou, and the artist who executed it was the painter Ferrer Bassa. In particular, the book to be illuminated was an already written, glossed and historiated psalter to which some scenes had to be added. The illumination was done between the end of 1346 and mid-1348. Based on these premises and other arguments, we identify the artwork in question as the Great Canterbury Psalter (Anglo-Catalan Psalter), which is housed in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (Manuscrit Latin 8846) in Paris. This confirms the authorship of the artwork and sets its execution chronologically. Until now, the attribution and dating of the miniature illustrations had varied according to the different published studies. In addition, this study shows that the artwork patron is an unexpected one, Infante Peter of Aragon, a crucial person to understand the 14th century from the Catalan and European perspectives.

    El present article aporta diversos documents inèdits sobre la il·luminació d’un llibre manuscrit, il·lustrat a la Catalunya del segle xiv. El comitent de l’obra era un membre de la família reial, l’infant Pere d’Aragó i d’Anjou, i l’artista que l’executà fou el pintor Ferrer Bassa. Concretament, el llibre a miniar era un saltiri ja escrit, glossat i historiat, al qual se li havien d’afegir algunes escenes. El treball artístic va portar-se a terme entre final del 1346 i mitjan 1348. Amb aquestes premisses i altres arguments, identifiquem l’obra en qüestió amb el conegut Saltiri anglocatalà conservat a París (Biblioteca Nacional de França, ms. lat. 8846). Això representa una confirmació de l’autoria artística i una fixació cronològica d’aquest còdex, ja que, fins ara, l’atribució i la datació havien anat oscil·lant a partir dels diferents estudis publicats. A més, també suposa trobar-nos davant d’un promotor inesperat, l’infant Pere d’Aragó, una personalitat clau per entendre el segle xiv des d’una perspectiva catalana i europea.
