    RESUMEN La atención institucional a quienes padecen un trastorno mental ha tenido grandes modificaciones a través de la historia. El objetivo del presente trabajo es describir la evolución de la atención psiquiátrica institucionalizada desde el asilo hasta el hospital de día. Se llevó a cabo un estudio de revisión bibliográfica con la utilización de métodos del nivel teórico, como el histórico-lógico. Como motor de búsqueda se utilizó Google Académico y las palabras manicomio, hospital psiquiátrico, hospitalización parcial y hospital de día, lo que permitió la ubicación y revisión de los artículos utilizados en la investigación y enumerados en las referencias bibliográficas. Los incipientes intentos de atención y la falta de tratamientos eficaces para el trastorno psíquico llevaron a la creación de instituciones, en su mayoría atendidas por órdenes religiosas. En las instituciones y en su funcionamiento se produjeron cambios que condujeron a modificar el trato a los pacientes con la creación de servicios en hospitales generales, la hospitalización parcial hasta la atención diferenciada en la comunidad. La necesidad de mejorar y actualizar la atención en hospitales psiquiátricos mejoró el servicio ofrecido y propició la creación de los hospitales de día, extendidos a nivel global como eficaz opción de atención.

    ABSTRACT Institutional care for those suffering from a mental disorder has undergone great changes throughout history. The objective of this work is to describe the evolution of institutionalized psychiatric care from the asylum to the day hospital. A bibliographic review study was carried out with the use of theoretical level methods, such as historical-logical. Google Scholar and the words asylum, psychiatric hospital, partial hospitalization and day hospital were used as a search engine, which allowed the location and review of the articles used in the research and listed in the bibliographic references. Incipient attempts at care and the lack of effective treatments for psychic disorder led to the creation of institutions, mostly run by religious orders. Changes occurred in the institutions and in their operation that led to modifying the treatment of patients with the creation of services in general hospitals, partial hospitalization to differentiated care in the community. The need to develop and update care in psychiatric hospitals improved the service offered and led to the creation of day hospitals, spread globally as an effective care option.
