    El propósito del artículo es doble. En primer lugar, describir las circunstancias históricas y geopolíticas que afectan a la situación del sureste peninsular a lo largo del siglo XVI. Esta situación tiene un elemento fijo, la cercanía con el norte de África, y numerosos elementos variables, que se pueden englobar en el marco de las tensiones entre las monarquías hispánicas y el imperio otomano por el control del Mediterráneo. El segundo propósito es ilustrar las consecuencias de dicha situación en una minería de enclave en torno a la explotación de la piedra de alumbre, y la fabricación y expedición del alumbre en Rodalquilar (Almería). Estas consecuencias se refieren tanto a la disposición de las instalaciones de esta actividad minera como a los acontecimientos que pusieron de manifiesto su vulnerabilidad.

    The purpose of the article is twofold. Firstly, describe the historical and geopolitical circumstances that frame the situation of the southeast of the peninsula throughout the 16th century. This situation has a fixed element, the proximity to North Africa, and numerous variable elements, which can be included in the tension between the Hispanic monarchies and the Ottoman Empire for control of the Mediterranean. The second purpose is to illustrate the consequences of this situation in a mining center around the exploitation of alum stone, and the manufacture and shipment of alum in Rodalquilar (Almería). These consequences refer both to the layout of the facilities of this mining activity and to the events that revealed its vulnerability.
