Ignacio Rodríguez Nuñez, José Luis Leyes Borrajo, Gonzalo López Castro, Luis García Varela, M. Mercedes Gallas Torreira

  • Maternity oral health can have an effect on fetal health. Maternal periodontal disease could be associated with preterm low birth weight (PLBW). The determination of risk factors for the delivery of PLBW represents a public health priority by its implications on survive, grow and mature of this babies. PLBW is a major determinant of neonatal infant morbidity and mortality. Periodontal diseases are a group of infectious diseases localized in gingival tissues and caused by predominantly Gram-negative, anaerobic, and microaerophilic bacteria. Inflamed periodontal tissues produce significant amounts of pro-inflammatory cytokines, mainly interleukin 1 beta, IL-6, prostaglandin E2, and tumor necrosis factor alpha which may have systemic effects on the host. The etiological mechanism of periodontal disease in PLBW have been not elucidated. The purpose of this article is to analyze the recent studies in relation with this neonatal pathology.
