A partir de la comprensión que el filósofo P. Ricoeur tiene del arco hermenéutico conformado por los momentos de “explicar” y “comprender”, el artículo presenta la importancia de los contextos para la interpretación bíblica. Ilustramos dicha importancia con la Ley del Talión, lo cual nos conducirá desde el Código de Hammurabi hasta Martin Luther King. En el camino iremos presentando algunas características y aportaciones de las llamadas lecturas contextuales, para terminar con una breve reflexión crítica.

The article starts in the hermeneutical proposal of P. Ricoeur, consisting of two moments: “explaining” and “understanding”. From this distinction, the author presents the importance of contexts for biblical interpretation and llustrates it by the example of the law of retaliation, which will lead us from the Code of Hammurabi to Martin Luther King. Throughout the text some characteristics and contributions of the so-called “contextual readings” will be presented. The article concludes with a brief critical remark.
