La lexicografía del español debe atender a todo tipo de fuentes y, especialmente, a las que han sido más descuidadas, bien por ser consideradas secundarias, bien por la dificultad de acceder a ellas. Se trata de repertorios que, por la sencillez de su elaboración, constituyen una prelexicografía del español previa al desarrollo de estándares de formalización, y que se ha desarrollado con intensidad en América. Sus autores dieron por cumplida su labor sin necesidad de una metodología compleja, a pesar de lo cual aportan informaciones interesantes para la historia del léxico. Por su carácter dependiente de otras obras en las que están insertos, se ha denominado a estos repertorios glosarios escondidos.

The lexicography of Spanish must address all kinds of sources and, especially, those that have been neglected, either because they are considered secondary, or because of the difficulty to access them. These are repertoires that constitute a prelexicography of Spanish due to the simplicity of their elaboration, which came before the development of formalization standards, and it has developed, above all, in America. The authors of these repertoires considered their work accomplished without the need for a complex methodology; despite this, they provide interesting information for the history of the lexicon. Their dependent character on a wide variety of sources, where they are embedded, has led them to be called hidden glossaries.
